"Once again it is due to their presence, Lacus Clyne and Kira Yamato." ~ Gilbert Dullindal

Through out the series of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, Gilbert Dullindal, the chairman of ZAFT, had three threats to his "Destiny plan": 1) Logos 2) ORB and 3) Lacus Clyne. In Episode 7, Lacus was targeted by high ZAFT ranked soldiers to assassinate her (which Lacus and the others barely escaped from). This was the first move that Gilbert had taken against the remove of one of the three threats.

At first, we only see ZAFT taking down the Logos but once they were wiped out entirely, ORB and Lacus had to act quickly to stop the "Destiny Plan". Throughout the series, we see Gilbert's chess board and pieces on the board that represents the people in the war - those that had great influence (like Shinn and Rey) were knights, bishops, etc. and those who were just pawns in the plan (like Lunamaria). Lacus was named as "White Queen" by Gilbert which, I believe, symbolises her greatness in power and influence to others (similiar to the queen chess piece that has a wide range of moves). The Black, obvioulsy, must have been the ZAFT while the whites are the other three threats, Lacus as white queen being one of the highest threat of them all.

Previously in Gundam SEED, if you have read in the profile section, Lacus' role was to guide the people to the correct and more hopeful path for humanity. She sang songs that were the Coordinator's prayers - their side/story of the war. But in Seed Destiny, Lacus held much more power than she had back in Gundam SEED and still guides people towards a brighter future. On the other hand, Lacus didn't held such a big influence on her guiding role this time because she was equally sharing it with Kira, who also held the same ideal and lead (They were first two who could clearly see what Gilbert's plan was about).

In the last episode, Gilbert said "Once again it is due to their presence, Lacus Clyne and Kira Yamato.". This tells us why he sent the assassination and since Lacus had such a big influence on PLANT, he (techinically) "created" another Lacus, the imposter Meer Campbell who he has complete control over until the recent encounter of Meer and Lacus. Kira Yamato was the "mankind's hope and mankind's future" because he was created by humans as the Ultimate Coordinator inorder to lead mankind to their new future. Lacus, on the other hand, was the guider, the very essence that allowed people to hope for the future.

Gilbert had once explained that Lacus was suppose to fall in love with Athrun Zala and continue a great bloodline of the Zalas and the Clynes. But somewhere along the line Lacus had met Kira Yamato and thus, opened up a new hope/path was created for mankind. Was this their fate? Or just coincidence that should not have happened? Gilbert, desperately trying to find the answer behind one of his greatest threat.

IF Lacus and Kira had never met and stayed on their original "path" than chances are Destiny Plan would have taken over without much threat at all. Everyone will live according to their genetics and each day will be repeated the same, over and over again.
